In a rundown neighborhood called Skid Row, the failing flower shop owned by Mr. Mushnik is on the verge of closing. Seymour, a meek orphan who works there, pines for his kind-hearted but insecure coworker Audrey—who is stuck in an abusive relationship with Orin, a sadistic dentist.

One day, during a total eclipse, Seymour finds a strange, exotic plant and names it Audrey II after his crush. The plant attracts curious customers, reviving the shop’s fortunes. But there’s a problem: Audrey II won’t eat soil or water—it craves human blood.

At first, Seymour feeds the plant with drops from his own pricked fingers, but as Audrey II grows, so does its appetite—and its ability to speak. The plant tempts Seymour with promises of fame, fortune, and Audrey’s love, but demands he commit increasingly terrible acts to keep it fed.

As Seymour’s morality unravels, the plant’s true intentions are revealed: it is an alien species bent on world domination. By the end, the darkly comedic tone gives way to a cautionary ending—depending on the production, either Seymour and Audrey are eaten and the plant conquers the world, or they escape but the menace still spreads.
